The dissertation uses as its starting point, the modern interest in emulating ancient Greek runners. 2010 was heralded as the 2,500 year anniversary of the original marathon run, the journey of an Athenian soldier from the battlefield at Marathon to Athens to bring news of their victory over the Persians. That most famous of ancient Greek institutions, the Olympic Games, was revitalised for the modern world in 1896.
Modern runners compete in races and athletic contests, they watch the Olympics and participate in marathons – activities that in many ways glorify ancient Greek runners. This dissertation discovers if there is any truth in the modern view that the ancient Greeks were skilled runners – tackling long distances and celebrating both those who won races, and running itself, as a worthwhile skill, worthy of praise and celebration.
Chapter one looks at running for the battlefield – specifically the marathon legend and other stories of long distance running. Chapter two examines runners in athletic contests in order to see how they were revered and what kinds of races the ancient Greeks ran compared to how we think of them today. Chapter three looks mainly at athletic contests in Homer and running elsewhere in literature and chapter four looks at what Plato had to say about running in terms of philosophy.
These chapters all contribute to the examination of running and runners in ancient, fifth century Greece – a time when some (presumably with natural talent) were able to make their living from covering vast distances on foot to deliver messages, athletes tended to be from the elite ranks of society who could afford to spend their time training, but, those with great natural ability were also able to earn a living.
